References are of the form <X text> where < introduces
a reference > ends a reference, X is a capital letter A to Z inclusive,
(a space must follow this letter), and text is the text
of the reference. NOTE that when <L occurs the text must
consist of numerals, and is assumed to mean a line number. If the
symbol following the < is not a capital letter all symbols
between < and > are ignored. An error report will be generated
if your text does not conform to these rules.
A reference must not be split across lines.
